Landscape Designer Contractor Salary

Landscape designer contractor salary depends on where the work is primarily done. For example, L.A. Times estimates that California landscape designers make $35,000 to $49,000, or more (as of 2006).

However, those figures can only provide an estimate of earnings, even for California, as most landscape contractors are self-employed.

Furthermore, the earnings range widely depending on variety of factors.

For those that work in different positions for larger landscaping firms, as opposed to being self-employed, there is some data available for hourly earnings from collegegrad.com, from 2004.

According to their data, the median hourly earnings in May 2004 of grounds maintenance workers were:

  • First-line supervisors/managers of landscaping, lawn service, and groundskeeping workers : $16.99
  • Tree trimmers and pruners : $12.57
  • Pesticide handlers, sprayers, and applicators, vegetation : $12.30
  • Landscaping and groundskeeping workers : $9.82
  • Grounds maintenance workers, all other : $9.57

As for related fields, the grounds maintenance workers perform most of the work outdoors and require knowledge of plants and soils.

Similarly, jobs that may require working outdoors include agricultural work, farming, ranching, and agricultural management, forestry, conservation, and logging work, landscape architecture, and biological science.
