Asphalt Shingle Roof Coating
Asphalt shingle roof coating is the most popular roofing in America, due to roofing material in America due to its low cost and easy installation.
Asphalt shingles are so popular in fact, that they account for some 75 to 80 percent of new and replacement roofing, according to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association.
Looking at the expected 20-30 year usage range is not all there is to asphalt shingles, however. Regular inspections and repairs to keep the shingles watertight are important as they are in maintaining any other type of roofing system.
The features that have made shingles so popular since the early years of the 20th century have been their low cost, ease of installation, fire-resistance, and variety of colors and textures.
Most of the asphalt shingles of today are made from organic or fiberglass felts saturated with asphalt and covered with an aggregate mineral surface. Such mixture results in the expected20 to 30 years of usefulness as roofing.
However, premium shingles are often warranted for much longer periods of time, from 30 to 40 years.
As a rule of thumb, the thicker and heavier the base layers of a shingle, the longer it will likely last.
